About FarmerJawn Produce & Kitchen

We have 128 acres and grow vegetables, fruits, grains, chickens and soon lamb.

Our Story

We’re a 128-acre working farm, building a model that enables regenerative organic foodproductionby and for underserved communities. That makes us the largest Black-woman owned regenerative and transitioning to organic produce farm in America. We provideaccessto fresh chemical-free foods within food deserts and the community at large through our storefronts.Educationon the how and where food comes from is offered through on-farm and in-class school-based programming and adult agri-business training. We are increasingAwarenessaround the challenges and opportunities plaguing our society while also creatingLifestyleproducts to live happier and healthier lives. FarmerJawn is building regenerative foodways that enable underserved communities to access health through fresh foods, understand the food is medicine connection, and empower a sustainable economy for the next generation of urban and wellness entrepreneurs.Grow with us. We’re also curating food distribution hubs using inner city properties. We have multiple models to empower access to fresh, organic produce throughout underserved communities. First, ourCSAoffers a simple subscription service to get fresh produce on a regular schedule (sign upfor our 2023 season). Second, ourGreeneryprovides a retail location to buy and learn how to grow food on your own. Lastly, we’re launching our firstCornerJawnsoon - a new approach to the corner store, designed to provide a “food is medicine” alternative to the neighborhood staple with fresh, convenient, and affordable options for those who need them most. We believe that systemic change begins with education. To that end, we’ve developed several programs to provide training through ourAgriculture Business Incubator,School-Based Programmingfor local schools, andCommunity Classeshosted at our farms and partner sites. There are many challenges that face Black, brown, and marginalized communities. We are addressing those obstacles by increasing awareness through profile and community-orientedevents. We’re formingPartnershipswith local and global organizations to boost visibility around our model, and push for regenerative agriculture practices nationwide. We’re on a mission to help improve physical, social, and environmental health - all of which are in service of living happier lives. Celebrate our journey together withViva Leaf Teaproducts and seed to shelf merchandise or try our organic-focusedrecipes. Although FarmerJawn was built primarily to support underserved communities, all humans are facing (or are about to face) food-related health issues. Our mono-crop mass agriculture industry is unsustainable, and is destroying the environment. Local farming could change that. But fresh, organic food is not a privilege; it is a human right. Marginalized groups have the poorest health outcomes and the highest rate of gun violence. In the face of these issues, each compounded by systemic racism, urban agriculture is a vector of hope. Access to healthy food, environments bettered by healthy soil and crops, and a community built around local farms can revitalize urban communities and connect rural food systems alike. This leads to healthier societies and a healthier planet. Founder & CEO, Christa Barfield is a James Beard Leadership Awardee, Generation Change fellow, Philadelphia's Community Wellness Leader, Philly Mag “Best of Philly” and Top 100 & 150 Most Influential People in Philly, PA State Commissioner for Agricultural Products, and is recognized as a "Food is Medicine" & nutrition security champion by the USDA.
