About Hawaii Forest Farms

WE ARE A FOREST FARM IN THE HEART OF HAWAII. WE GROW Māmaki, AN ENDEMIC HAWAIIAN PLANT THAT IS CONSIDERED A “MIRACLE TEA” BY ANCIENT HAWAIIANS USED IN MEDICINE AND FOR WELLBEING. Hawaii Forest Farms is located near Volcano Village on the big island of Hawai’i. Hawaii Forest Farms’ home location is an agroforestry farm dedicated to the natural and sustainable restoration of native forest ecosystems. We focus on the growth of Māmaki, an ancient endemic ‘superleaf’ that has been used as an herbal tea, medicine, tonic and source of fiber for Hawaiians for centuries. Our mission is to grow delicious organic Māmaki tea while restoring the native hawaiian rainforest. Hawaii Forest Farms is one of the two largest suppliers to Shaka Tea, the leading brand of ready-to-drink bottled Māmaki tea, and to multiple brands of bagged and loose leaf tea sold online, at retail and in food services.**Pipturus albidus, known as Māmaki in Hawaiian (and Waimea pipturus), is a species of flowering plant in the nettle family,Urticaceae. Māmaki is endemic to the Hawaiian Islands, meaning it originated and evolved in Hawaii as a ‘stingless’ nettle with multiple health & wellness benefits. Drink Hawaii Forest Farms Māmaki tea! We would love to host your next event. We welcome tour groups, school field trips, family events, weddings and VIP events at your convenience! Hawaiʻi Forest Farms is a 29-acre, native rainforest farm located on Hawaiʻi Island, also known as the “Big Island” near the lush, artist community of Volcano Village. Founded by ahui(group) of like-minded sustainability, nutrition and healthy beverage enthusiasts, as well as professional agroforestry experts, Hawaiʻi Forest Farms is a community resource, offering tours and educational experiences for kamaʻāina and visitors, in addition to supplying Shaka Tea, the first line of bottled māmaki tea. Māmaki is a culturally significant plant that is endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. Māmaki leaves are made into tea or used as a medicine or tonic, and bark of mature trees is used as a fiber. Māmaki is only found and grown in Hawaii. It is a member of the nettle family, noted for the medicinal properties of its European varieties, but evolved in Hawaii to be stingless as the islands lack endemic herbivores that consume mamaki. Visitors can pick varieties of māmaki leaves, see māmaki seedlings, shrubs and trees at various stages of development. The forest farm also has clusters of wild poha berries, groves of koa trees, ʻōhia, cultivated cook pines, and at least 10 identifiable native plant species and birds.

Our Story

our mission & history Hawaiʻi Forest Farms publicly opened its doors in 2019 after two years of intensive work removing invasive understory plants and replanting the rich, native Hawaiian rainforest with māmaki underneath old-growth koa, ʻōhiʻa trees, and hāpu'u ferns. Hawaiʻi Forest Farms is working to preserve and restore critical native ecosystem habitat, share a vision for a sustainable way to grow māmaki as well as other understory crops, and serve as a community resource and learning center for kamaʻāina and visitors alike.
