About Kawailoa Farm

Tour de Farm: A Cross Country Bike Quest For the Female Farmer Perspective.  By Claire Thompson Awesome article for me to read as I embark on the Ag Xposure in the GoFarm program!  One of my questions to the Rapune brothers was whether this new generation of farmers has it easier than their generation, what with programs like GoFarm hand feeding these kinds of resources, or if the politics and land lease policies and tendencies makes it harder for land access and other important resources/motivation.  Here these nomadic psuedo-researchers on bikes/my heroes mention disadvantages of folks gung ho and eager to start farming in their early 20's. The issue of developing a business sense for your farm is exactly what the GoFarm program addresses as well!! Our Story

Libre Farm, LLC is Dave and Justine Espiritu's effort to be the food revolution they want to see in the world. Through the GoFarm Hawaii program, they received a 2-year lease on 1/8 acre of land at the Waimanalo Research Center, where they record their successes and failures in their first business together. The farm was founded around 2010-2011, based on blog post dates mentioning farm activities and visits to Kawailoa Farm. They are incubated by the GoFarm program and focus on growing food and connecting consumers with small, organic producers. They started their CSA in April 2014 and completed their 7th harvest in June 2014, indicating a short CSA season for that year. They also mention 'Hustlin' Veggies At the Farmer's Markets'. Kawailoa Farm, where Ted grows asparagus and eggplant, is mentioned as a place Justine visited and learned from, implying a connection or inspiration for Libre Bird Farm's organic practices. The website is a place to organize thoughts and information and gain knowledge from other people and their experiences, with a focus on valuing and investing in farmers and healthy food systems. They appreciate customers keeping an open mind and supporting locally grown produce that then supports the Gofarm program and educating other aspiring food growers. They are currently conceptualizing their business plan/manifesto and a feedback form for customers. They also mention that they are growing food on 1/8 of an acre and are incubated by the GoFarm program, so they prefer to say they are 'growing food' rather than 'farming'. They also mention that they are working to pool from all of their food resources to give their CSA customers their money's worth of diversity. They also mention that they are growing food from seeds and that they care about food and farmers and want to learn more. They also mention that their political science background is responsible for opening their heart and mind to the idea that if we want a better world, we have to imagine
