Seed is saved only from open-pollinated garlic grown beyond pollinating distance from related varieties. When there is any uncertainty, the seed is not saved.Each year, my garlic becomes stronger as it adapts to my soil and growing conditions, without the use of synthetic pesticides or fungicides. The best time to plant garlic is in thefall (late September to November), several weeks before the ground freezes, allowing roots to establish before winter dormancy, though spring planting (early as possible, by March/April) is also possible but yields smaller bulbs.
